Get trained! – Even if winter has not really shown its teeth and at least Nordälpler keeps us on a short leash, we met with 16 motivated winter sportsmen to subject the dusty knowledge of avalanche science to a makeover. With the great support of the Alpine Club Zell am See, we met in the local clubhouse to have not only the Advent candles but also the heads smoke on December 20. In two hours of information, we told stories about snow conversions, wind influences and temperature gradients to lay the theoretical foundation for the following practice day. On Saturday we finally met in the rear of the Glemmtal to transfer what we had learned into nature. With manageable snow heights we started in the direction of Lindlingalm, then turn north side towards Schusterkogel. After all, we found at least knee-deep snow in the sun-protected exposure, which let us bury the beep devices at least protected from view. The dug snow profiles also had the advantage that the digging was done with a few shovel bits. Nevertheless, we were able to make perfect use of the day, put what we have learned into practice and clarify many unanswered questions. Finally, we benefited from the not coincidentally so close hut and strengthened ourselves with coffee and pot strudel – as it should be!
