Valley traverse, Krimml Aachental to Obersulzbachtal
The perfect glacier tour for beginners. The Krimmler Achental is one of the longest and most remote valleys of Salzburg and even shares a border with Italy. It has always been an important gateway to the south, and therefore seen a lot of travellers throughout the centuries. Not the pass to Italy is described here though, its the traverse to Obersulzbachtal. This is just the transition between hiking and mountaineering. Not too hard uphill combined with glacier travel.
What’s to be expected:
- What used to be a three day excursion, due to easy access by National Park Taxis, this can be done nowadays in one single day. We meet early at the parking lot in Krimml and take the taxi to the very end of the Krimmler Achental. In 1.5 hours we climb to Warnsdorfer Hütte, where we can have a second breakfast. Then its another 1.5 hours to Gamsspitzl, 2880 m, which will be the highest point of the day. On its backside we have to rope up and get acquainted with our crampons … cause here the ice and glacier starts. We have a little time to take pictures and play around on the ice shield before we reach a challenging trail down to valley bottom of Obersulzbachtal. Here again we can hop on a National Park Taxi and go back to where we started.
