Kitzsteinhorn – Summit Renovated

Kaprun is now a vibrant centre of winter sports. But if you look back a few decades, the village joins a group of well-known and important mountaineering villages such as Heiligenblut or Sulden on the Ortler. Early on, the Kapruners began to take advantage of the value of their beautiful mountain world and were thus real pioneers in the tourist and mountaineering development. And so it is not surprising that the Kitzsteinhorn, as the lifeline of the community, also adheres to these traditions. On the initiative of the Director of the Board of the Kitzsteinhorn, Ing. Norbert Karlsböck, the mountain guides Zell am See Kaprun in cooperation with the Alpine Ski School Angerer and Hirnböck were commissioned to rehabilitate the ascent to the striking summit. The aim was to bring the insured climb from the summit restaurant to the summit cross to the latest safety technology. Thanks to the beautiful September, we were able to get through this project in one week: old safety bars were flexed. About 100 new steel anchorages were installed and these were secured against the snow load with 50 drill hooks. A new steel rope was then pulled in. Almost a tonne of steel was invested by the glacier railways in the safety of the climb, which is now waiting for numerous visitors. Nevertheless, Geri, as a construction site polisher, clearly points out that: ” … it is not a via ferrata, but an alpine path in the high mountains. All hazards such as weather and snow conditions must still be assessed by themselves. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact us!” If the new climb proves successful, there is still potential to revive the summit and the dilapidated climb over the Nordgrat in the coming summers.
